Howdy Watchers & Deviants!Since Free Comic Book Day I've experienced a much appreciated break from the constantly-having-to-work pile of commissions and projects. I still have work to do, but not as much and without crunched deadlines! The comic I colored and lettered is out in the world, having debuted on FCBD, and I've finished a couple more new prints for 2016 conventions. I've had a lot of great experiences in the comic realm in the last year or two, I've met some great artists, writers, and enthusiasts, made new friends, and learned a lot about self publishing and the process of putting together a comic. Even more than what I've learned from working at a publisher for almost 3 years, if you can believe it! Which is not a discredit to what I've learned at my day job, it's just that having to work alone or with a tight-knit group on an independent project is both a lot more fun and a lot more stressful! It is more personal and having to find avenues of printing and testing paper and finding commercial use typography and all that jazz without the connections and resources of a publisher was an intensely beneficial learning experience. I know my next comic project will be better and more successful thanks to this experience. And I do have a couple ideas cooking in my head for an independent comic or two, or three.
But, on the flip side, I'm also deciding to take a break from comic work for a while. I don't have anything immediate on my plate until issue #2 of One In, One Out is ready to be colored and it seems like a good time to focus on myself and my own aesthetics and artistic whimsies. There's a lot more I'd like to do with my work and truth be told, my ultimate goal (aside from just creating personal works) is to work on cover illustration for book publishing! So I will be spending time switching gears and refocusing my portfolio, improving my portfolio, as always, and hopefully getting back into traditional media, especially oil painting! I hope to do a lot of experimenting with technique and style and going back to the foundations of drawing, value, and color, and hopefully.... I'll come out the other side with a better grasp of what "my style" is and better, more personal and narrative, artwork! Stylistically I know how I like to handle linear drawings, but I miss semi-realism and I miss rendering form and texture so I am looking forward to this adventure in self exploration. (Wow, "self exploration"? I almost sound like a fine artist!)
So here's to the next step!
My artistic goals are:
- To continue to improve my linear artworks and pinups, working more with pencil and ink.
- To start working on fully rendered pencil drawings, moving into creating finished oil paintings.
- Do something with gold leaf.
- Plan out and execute an independent comic (single issue, possibly to be part of a personal anthology in the future)
- Begin my next series of personal works (currently in the research and sketch phase)
- Paint first book cover (already in the works, just hoping the book is published sooner rather than later!)
