My name is Rachel and I am an Illustrator, pursuing professional freelance work. I work as a digital associate at a comic book publisher and I fiddle with a variety of things, always seeking new challenges and knowing that there is always room to improve! :)

In the previous few years, I have won a place in the Society of Illustrator's annual student exhibition as well as "Outstanding Performance in Illustration" (Best In Show) at the senior thesis exhibition at Moore College of Art & Design (2014). I have exhibited my work at art festivals and small art galleries and attend several comic-conventions in the Artist Alleys.

I primarily work digitally, using a Wacom tablet and Adobe Photoshop CC. I also enjoy traditional media, especially pencil/ink drawing and oil painting (sometimes acrylics).

My main artistic interests are book cover/pinup art and character design or fantastical portraiture. I have a strong interest in fantasy/sci-fi genres and anything that allows me to infuse some rock-n-roll into my work.

Hello, All!

I don't really have too many new updates since the last journal entry, except to say that the Twin Tiers Comic Con was FANTASTIC (thank you to everyone who showed up and gave me their support, whether it was a kind word, your time, or buying a print).  I'm so proud to have been a part of this convention and I will continue to table every year I am available to in the future!  It is run by an amazingly dedicated team of fantastic individuals.  I will still be tabling at Baltimore CC in September, attending NYCC for fun in October, and I have now added the New Jersey Comic Expo (is that its name? hm...) in November, right before Thanksgiving!  Busy bee, busy bee...  You can expect at least two more comic-related pieces from me in the near future and then it's going to be a lot more personal work and a push towards improving my craft!  :D

Because I don't have much else to add, I'm going to fill out this questionnaire I've seen floating around:
  • How long have you been on DeviantArt?

    - Well, DeviantArt says 9 years but some of that time was spent lurking in the shadows, admiring the art of others.  I think that I have been posting art for the past 6 years, but mostly in the last few.

  • What does your username mean?

    - My first username (Rai-Kay) was a shortening of my first and last name.  My current user-name, and the one I anticipate will be my forever-name, is my first and middle name.  Thank you parents for giving me such an awesome name :P

  • Describe yourself in three words.

    - Kind, Funny (?), Artistic

  • Are you left or right handed?

    - Right handed

  • What was your first deviation?

The Joker by Rachel-Perciphone I have no idea why I haven't deleted this yet.  Possibly because I think it's cool to see how far I've come from where I started.  It's important to recognize your growth and keep continue to keep growing.

  • What is your favourite type of art to create?

    - PRETTY WOMEN haha

  • If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

    - Yo, I want to master oils.  I love using them and I'm good at painting still-lifes and portraits, etc... but when it comes to painting something more fantastical, I have some work to do.  But I've only attempted it once a couple years ago, so... I'm excited to finally use the easel I bought last year and try again!  I would also like to learn how to draw comic sequentials.

  • What was your first favourite?

    Future Vampiress by Larecia

  • What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

    - Digital art of various kinds.

  • Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

    - On DeviantArt?  Oh boy.  I don't think I have one specific favorite.  So many great people on my watchlist :D

  • If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

    - I can't think of this person's correct username spelling... and I don't know how to find my watching list.  I will update this later!

  • How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

    - I don't think anyone in particular has impacted my life, but overall this website has been chock full of inspiration, wonderful talents, and great tutorials / journals / etc....

  • What are your preferred tools to create art?

    - Photoshop and a Wacom tablet.  Pencil and a tuff-stuff eraser.  And oils.

  • What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

    - In my bedroom / home studio space :P

  • What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

    - A long time ago, before we were ever acquainted, an artist I really liked (Vinnie Tartamella) commented on one of my pieces out of nowhere!  Now I can say that I both like him as an artist and a person.  He's such a gem!  And another favorite moment was when I made a comment on another artist's piece, whose work I also admired, and he sent me a note back saying that I had impacted him and inspired him to make positive changes in his work!

  • Reading: American Gods - Neil Gaiman
  • Watching: America's Got Talent
  • Playing: Dragon Age: Inquisition (still)
  • Drinking: Raspberry/Pomegranate Tea with Honey

Another fan-art piece I made for my 2015 convention tour.  It was my goal to make 10 comic-related art-pieces this year to add to my portfolio and this completes number 8!  This started out as a sketch on my commute to work and has been extremely fun to work on.  Pencils, Ink, and Photoshop.

Thank you!  :D  I'm glad you like it.  I promise I'll show away my inner introvert and say "hi" the next time I see you at a convention!  I'm hoping to start getting a table at smaller cons next year, myself.

You have some interesting pieces. You mention that you are a comic book publisher. Maybe you want to come over to my gallery and have a little look at what I've been working on.

I will gladly take a look at your profile when I get out of work :)
But, I am not personally a comic book publisher.  I work for one called Dynamite
